About

Welcome to O.R. by the Beach!

My name is Tallys Yunes. I’m an associate professor of Management Science at the Miami Herbert Business School. I hold a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Carnegie Mellon University, and an M.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. I grew up in Rio de Janeiro and moved to the U.S. for good in 2000.

I am interested in solving complex decision problems that arise from a variety of practical applications, such as: scheduling (sports, healthcare, workforce, machines), product assortment optimization, political districting, information layout, and logistics in general. One of my goals with this blog is to help spread the word about the field of Operations Research (OR). Even though our lives are constantly surrounded by (and often dependent upon) its use, most people are clueless about what OR is. Here’s a very informative video about OR. The latest buzzword being used to describe what I do within OR is Prescriptive Analytics. I will also be talking about computers, academia (research and teaching), and life in general.
